- I mailed my video a week ago and you haven't e-mailed. Did you get it yet?
Maybe. We don't check the mailbox every day. If you don't hear from us after three weeks, then maybe it's time to worry.
- What happened to VHS? Why don’t you take it any more?
We don’t take VHS submissions any longer because it’s an obsolete format and the quality tends to be very low.
- I have a Mac with a SuperDrive. Will DVDs made with iDVD work?
Yes. However, we recommend getting good quality DVD-R media (such as Apple-branded DVD-Rs). The cheapest stuff is unreliable and often has problems.
- Why won't you take my video on VCD
VCDs are notoriously poor quality and we'd like to put on a high-quality show.
- Can I send a CD-ROM with MPEG-2 videos?
Yes.
- I don't have any way to get my video from my computer to DVD. Can't you make an exception for me and let me send in a CD-ROM?
See rule #5.
- You say we can't have inappropriate content. Is underwear inappropriate?
It may be inappropriate for cosplaying, but it's fine for AMVs. Just try to avoid any nudity that might give the kiddies nosebleeds. Keep in mind that at least one of the AMV screenings will be during Saturday morning cartoon hours.
- What about that scene in that show where all that violent stuff happens? Is that inappropriate?
We haven't seen every episode of every series ever created...so we can't say if something is okay or not. You're just going to have to use your own judgment and think to yourself, "If some paranoid parent caught their 8 year old daughter watching this, would they get mad?"
- Can I use video game footage?
This is an anime music video contest at an anime convention. However, we specifically wrote the rules to say, "At least 75% of each entry must contain anime-oriented footage." Notice the word "oriented". That means you can get away with using anime-like footage. Final Fantasy X and .hack//INFECTION are good examples of video games that would fall under that. Grand Theft Auto III would not. ...but when you get into stuff like the Italian plumber Mario in Super Smash Bros., you're in a grey area.
Basically, when we watch these entries to pick finalists, we'll see if it appeals to anime fans. If so, then we'll probably allow it.
- So can I use footage from Invader Zim?
Invader Zim is not anime. Zim footage would not count toward the 75% anime requirement. Ditto for The Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans.
- Can I use live action footage?
Again, the rules say, "At least 75% of each entry must contain anime-oriented footage." Bruce Lee is not anime-oriented and would be tossed out. On the other hand, if you used footage from the live action Sailor Moon musicals, that would be allowed since it is technically "anime-oriented". ...but if you submitted a video like that, we'd might rip the TV out while screaming and then hunt you down for revenge.
- Dude! I love DBZ and will make the most l33t fight video ever with music from Linkin Park.
That's not a question.
- Can I use footage I recorded off TV?
You can try, but those network logos in the corner are ugly. Covering it with your own logo is even uglier. Videos we have recieved in the past with footage recorded off TV have not scored well.
- Why do I need a concept statement? What’s up with that? In order to help our technical judges better, the concept statement has been implemented so that we can understand what you the creator are trying to accomplish with your video.
- If I'm not a finalist, will you still show my video?
Maybe. We have an overflow screening scheduled on Sunday morning where we can show some of the videos that didn't quite make it. If there are more videos than can be shown there, we may decide to either schedule a second overflow screening in a video room or simply not show the remaining videos and send our apologies to those creators.
- Do I have to go to Anime Boston to enter the contest?
No. You do not need to attend the convention to enter the contest. Attendance has no affect whatsoever on the determination of finalists...but we'll be disappointed if you win and aren't there to claim your trophy!
However, AMV contest finalists will get preferred seating during all AMV screenings (not including the Masquerade). Also, if you are not a finalist and have pre-registered for the convention when we select videos for the overflow screening, we will attempt to get your video shown at some point so that you can still see it on the big screen.
- When will you announce the results?
We will not announce finalist videos until the Thursday before the convention. (The ballot will be provided when you pick up your registration badge, we will not be posting the finalist list online before the convention.) However, we will tell the finalists that they're in the finals so that they know ahead of time...and we'll tell the finalists which of their videos are in the finals. We're just not going to tell attendees ahead of time which videos will be showing.
Winners will be announced and awards will be distributed during the Masquerade intermission on Saturday. A list of winners will be posted online within a few days after the convention. (...although I'd imagine someone will post the winners in the forum before we do that.)
- When I win, can I run through the streets of Boston screaming with excitement?
Whatever floats your boat.
- Can you send me a copy of the contest?
No, sorry. First off, there are legal issues about distributing the anime and music that could potentially get the convention into serious trouble were the AMV contest to be distributed by a member of the convention staff. Secondly, the AMV contest is extremely popular and the demand would simply be too great...and we really don't have that kind of free time. (Not even Anime Boston's staff will be getting copies of the Anime Boston AMV Contest!)
However, many AMV creators have chosen to make their AMVs available online and through various other means of distribution. We suggest you contact the AMV creators directly.
