Anime Boston realizes the dual nature of the concept of anime fansubs. On the one hand, they serve as a tremendous catalyst exposing anime fans to fresh new anime that has only just come out and raise the profile of a series for potential acquisition. On the other hand, they can have a detrimental effect on legally licensed commercial releases. In an effort to make our position on fansubs clear, we have adopted the following policy:
- Anime Boston will not show fansubs of any anime titles when that title has been released for commercial distribution in the United States.
- Anime Boston will only show fansubs of anime titles when that title has not yet been licensed for commercial distribution in the United States unless the current license holder has granted written permission to show the fansub.
- In the event that Anime Boston is made aware that it is showing or plans to show a fansub of an anime title that has been licensed or released for commercial distribution in the United States and Anime Boston does not have permission to show that title, Anime Boston will immediately remove it from the program.
Anime Boston and The New England Anime Society proudly support the legal purchase and viewing of titles which have been commercially released in the United States and encourage others to do so as well.
